Iluminismul a fost marea miscare filosofica a secolului al XVIII-lea ,care considera ca ratiunea umana este singura in stare sa ”ilumineze” calea catre realizarea fericirii umane .Iluminismul este un termen generic prin care se pot prezenta toate tendintele societatii din acel secol : spiritul inventiv ,cercetarea stiintifica ,enciclopedismul ,conceptia optimista despre lume ,credinta in progres , folosirea luminilor inteligentei ,inlocuirea obiceiului si traditiei prin ratiune ,tendinta de a pune totul la indoiala dintr-o perspectiva critica .
